The Cannes Lions are the pièce de résistance of awards festivals, and they wanted something cutting edge, immersive and interactive to make a mark. We couldn’t wait to sink our teeth into the challenge and create a bold experience that people couldn’t wait to get their hands on.
We created Cannes Lions AR App, the first-ever AR app for the festival to enhance what was already a thrilling event. Fueled by Unity 3D, festival-goers were able to follow along with the schedule of events, select a seminar or point of interest, and seamlessly be guided to where they want to go through a custom pathfinder. But it was not just utilitarian—a “fun” module invited users to participate in nine unique AR experiences, including immersive portals, AR photo filters and mini games. In their altered reality, they were able to party on a yacht, rev the engine of a vintage Bond car or wander around a fashion museum.
The latest AR technology—Apple’s ARKit and Google’s AR Core—powered the experience and precise GPS tracking allowed the app to know exactly where each user was in order to display stunning augmentations.
The Cannes Lions festival is always the event of the year. But with the AR app, festival-goers enjoyed an experience they would always remember as their realities were altered in the most delightful way possible.
