UNIT9’s 30-second commercial for National Geographic Channel’s “Beyond Magic with DMC” is a dramatic and stylish film with a dark edge.

Directed by Jonathan Pearson, the ad shows so-called master of illusion Drummond Money-Coutts in an eerie, empty warehouse as he makes the furniture around him levitate and then, with a snap of his fingers, drop suddenly to the floor.

The film pays tribute to a number of magicians, including Harry Houdini and Uri Geller. The pacing is fast and the lighting is diffused, creating suspense and a sense of mystery. We see Money-Coutts manage to levitate dozens of spoons and pick one up out of mid-air. Slow motion follows quick shots to punctuate the film with a dramatic finish before the program’s title is introduced.
